Bluejay java.lang.OutOfMemoryError Solution (Windows)

Does the Bluejay become unresponsive after loading a large dataset, or zooming in? If so, you may be running into a memory limitation because by default applets can only consume 64 MB of memory. A java.lang.OutOfMemoryError occurs when Bluejay cannot allocate the resources needed to perform the genome data parsing/rendering. If you cannot use suggested the Web Start or application versions of Bluejay found here, the applet can tweaked.

You can manually adjust the memory available to Java applets under Windows with these steps:

  1. Java applet memory is set in the Java plugin properties under Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Java Plug-in icon (its appearance may be different depending on the version installed). The Java plugin settings window will be displayed.
  3. Depending on your version of the plugin, the Java Runtime Parameters text field is either under the "basic" or "advanced" tab. Replace 128 in the example images with up to the number of MB of RAM in your system.

  4. Click the Apply button to ensure that your changes take effect.
  5. Restart your Web browser and return to the Bluejay applet.
